The Church Serving Seafarers
The Apostleship of the Sea is a global Catholic mission serving seafarers working far from home. The port
chaplaincy’s mission is to meet the spiritual and temporal needs of this floating community of seafarers.
Services offered include shipboard visits, Eucharistic celebrations, cabin blessings, counseling, and
assistance for sick or injured seafarers or those facing various onboard issues. The mission also has a
social justice dimension, defending seafarers’ rights.
Contact is maintained with seafarers' families, particularly in cases of accidental death or suicide, to
provide assistance, comfort, and guidance in obtaining rightful services or compensation from
companies and agencies.
